Valentines Day Beauty 2017

Looking back at last year's Valentine's Day makeup post made me realise how much the products I use and my approach to beauty in general has changed in the past year and I think this makeup look really reflects that.

I try to keep a 'natural' base now and wear less foundation in general. Before my foundation always had to be high coverage because I felt like every inch of my flaws had to be covered. I think the change is mostly as I'm a lot more confident in myself as a person and less caring when it comes to what others think of me or the fact that I didn't bother to conceal that annoying spot on my chin. I've (finally) accepted that my skin won't ever look perfect too. I have under-eye bags, hormonal acne, smile lines and random broken capillaries and it's okay if the world sees that (occasionally).

I started by priming with Smashbox's new Radiance Primer which I've been using on and off since it launched in January. It highlights the skin and makes it look really dewy and you can also use it over makeup for an added glow. Next I applied a little of the EX1 Invisiwear Liquid Foundation which gives pretty light and natural-looking coverage. It doesn't really cover scarring or blemishes but I love that this evens out my skintone and gives a smooth finish without it being really obvious I'm wearing makeup. I swept a few shades from the new NARS unfiltered cheek palette over my lids and cheeks for a pop of colour and extra highlight. This palette is so amazingly pigmented I had to have a really light hand with this! I then filled in my brows, added a little mascara and a simple slick of gloss on my lips to finish as I didn't want to look too overdone.

Beauty | NARS Cosmetics Faves

I first dipped my toe into the world of NARS at the beginning of the Summer and now they're my go-to brand. Over the last few months I've amassed a few favourites I've gushed about already on but I thought I'd share them here.

NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint (£30)
I love this foundation which is strangely described as a tint. This is more than just a tinted moisturiser and the coverage is absolutely beautiful. It's not full coverage but medium and buildable giving a really skin-like finish. The finish is matte enough that I barely have to use any powder afterwards too. This is a winner for my oily skin and whilst I still love the Sheer Glow Foundation (mentioned here) this is definitely my favourite out of the two. You also get 50ml of product in this tube so it goes a lot further than other foundations I've tried.

NARS Dual Intensity Blush (£30)
I have two shades of the Dual Intensity Blushes - Frenzy (Gold/Orange) and Panic (Fuschia/Pink) and they're like no other blush product I own. You can use them wet or dry and the formula holds up well used either way. They swatch beautifully pigmented from the pan onto my fingers but when applied to the cheeks with a brush the colour comes out very sheer. It's definitely not what I'm used to as it's hard to use too much product with these. None of the makeup brushes I had really worked with this product how I liked so I ended up grabbing the brush NARS created for this product (#23 Wet/Dry Blush Brush). For full colour used dry I find I have to pack the product onto my brush for it to come out as pigmented as I want on the skin. Wet the colour sort of washes over the skin. This blush has a luminous feel and it looks so beautiful as it almost behaves like a stain. The highlight in the Frenzy compact is just so beautiful too. This is one of those products that isn't for everyone but now I know how to use it I couldn't be without it.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (£22.50)
In one of my videos I asked people to recommend concealers to try and so many of you told me to get this concealer I finally did a few months ago. The formula is so easy to blend and I just need the tiniest amount to cover up any dark spots or redness. I originally got this to conceal/brighten my under eye area but no matter what I do every product I use creases like crazy, including this. I probably need to work on my technique or try a different primer under my eyes but when I figure it out I'm hoping I can minimise the look of my dark circles better. Otherwise this concealer is perfect and I rely on this most when I don't want to wear foundation.

Have you tried anything by NARS?

Summer Beauty

This Summer I've been hauling like crazy. I mean really crazy. I actually like having a small makeup collection but working in beauty has given me an excuse to buy excessive amounts of makeup (and it's actively encouraged). It's also made me experiment more as until recently I bought and used mostly MAC makeup. I've now changed almost every item I rely on daily so I thought I'd share some of the products I've been reaching for most this summer.

Bases & Primers
Priming my skin is now an essential step for me and I've been using most*. It's super hydrating which in all honestly I don't totally need (as I have naturally oily skin) but I'm less fussed about having a super matte face recently. I also made the switch to NARS foundation after pretty much only using MAC bases for years. MAC has just been far too pink for my skin recently (even though the same shades used to match perfectly before), which means I constantly have to adjust the tone (see for how). I'm used to foundations not matching straight out of the bottle so I wasn't expecting much but I'm using the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Barcelona and it's perfect. I also grabbed the radiant creamy concealer in Ginger as so many of you have recommended this concealer to me. I love the texture and have been using it to brighten my under-eye area.

A few months ago I didn't own a single highlighter. I now have 10. It's excessive and unnecessary but I've become obsessed with having glowy-looking skin. My favourites are the Becca Glow on the Go Minis I shared with you back in May () and the NARS Illuminator in Super Orgasm (I probably won't get over that name, it literally makes me blush). They're all richly pigmented so you barely need to use any to get beautiful glowy skin. I might actually get another of the NARS Illuminators but in a different tone. I love it but Super Orgasm is a peach/pink shade, so I prefer to use this on my cheeks only whereas the Becca minis look more natural applied anywhere.

Liquid lipstick
I rarely reach for actual lipsticks anymore and instead liquid or glosses are the products I use most. There's a few brands I've been buying but I have bought more NYX lip colours than any other recently. They're so affordable (well they are until you buy loads at once) and I just love the colour range. I have a few of the Lip Lingerie shades and the Soft Matte Lip Creams but the Intense Butter Glosses are my go-to currently. The wear isn't amazing but the colour pay-off is absolutely gorgeous.

I've changed a lot of other aspects of my makeup routine (like how I do my brows) but I'll save the details for another post.
